18 APG Meet and International Conference, 2017

The 18 APG Meet and International Conference is being hosted by Department of Geography, Lovely Professional University, Jalandhar on 27 and 28 October 2017. This mega event of academic domain of geography is primarily focused on to provide a forum to the geographers, social scientists, researchers, policy makers, administrators and students for deliberation and dissemination of contemporary research on a wide range of issues related to globalization, development and new world order. It will provide a platform to social scientists and policy makers for dialogue, debate and formation of strategies for the successful implementation and to resolve challenges related to fallouts of globalization, development and emerging world order.

Executive Committee (2017-18; 2018-19)

New Executive Committee of APG has taken over with Dr. M.S. Jaglan as President and Dr. Dharam Singh Sandhu as President Elect.

State Level Geographical Quiz Contest-2017

A State Level Geographical Quiz Contest was organized by Post Graduate Department of Geography, SCD Govt. College, Ludhiana on 18th February, 2017. Twenty one teams from different colleges of Punjab participated in the event. Govt. College for Girls, Ludhiana won the first position, SCD Govt. College, Ludhiana won second and Mata Gujri College, Fatehgarh Sahib won third position respectively.

Zonal Level and State Level Geographical Quiz Contest-2018

Taking into account the interest and potentialities of the departments, distribution and coverage of the colleges in the state, APG has decided to divide the State into 7 Quiz Contest Zones with Conveners and Co-Conveners, so that maximum departments and students of geography from all over Punjab could get benefited from this geographic and valuable academic activity.

Awards

Dr. Saminderjit Singh Young Geographer Award-2017

Original research papers along with bio-data of the authors who are Masters in Geography and have not attained the age of 32 years are invited from all over India and SAARC countries for the Young Geographer Award competition. A soft copy of the paper prepared according to the format of 'Punjab Geographer' should be submitted in English to Dr. B.R. Thakur,Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, H.P. University, Shimla (E-mail- brthakur53@gmail.com, Mob-09418065518 who has been authorized by the APG Secretariat to coordinatethis competition.

Prof. Davender Singh Raina Memorial Award

Association of Punjab Geographers is considering to institute an award in the memory of Prof. Davender Singh, Department of Geography, University of Jammu, who has left us for heavenly abode during the prime of his life. APG shall be thankful to the members who can suggest us the nomenclature, procedure and methodology of such award/competition or anything else to make it a success. The suggestions can be mailed to Dr. Lakhvir Singh Gill, General Secretary, APG on lakhvirsgill@gmail.com phone 9814928741. The views received will be discussed during EC meeting at the annual Meet of APG, at LPU to take the final decision.

Institute of Spatial Planning and Environment Research, Panchkula

6th Two-day International Seminar on 'Implementation of Urban Missions: Resilient Cities, Sustainable Technologies and SmartInfrastructure' was organized by the ISPER on April 21-22, 2017.

Department of Geography, University of Jammu, Jammu

Three students have been awarded Ph.D. in March 2017:

1. Davinder Singh, "Assessment of Potential Agroforestry in Jammu District Using Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques" under the supervision of Dr. Anuradha Sharma.

2. Lokinder Singh, "Impact of Development on the Environment of Jammu City (1981-2011): A study in Environmental Geography", under the supervision of Prof. V.S. Manhas.

3. Gagan Deep, "Literacy Pattern in Jammu District (1981-2011): A Spatio Temporal Analysis in Population Geography" under the supervision of Prof. V.S. Manhas.

Department of Geography, H.P. University, Shimla

The department organized 4 day workshop from 10 to 13 June, 2017 on Preparation of Definitional Dictionary of Geography under the aegis of Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, New Delhi. The workshop was coordinated by Dr. BR Thakur.

Department of Geography, Baba Farid P.G. College, Baba Farid Institute of Higher and Foreign Studies, Deon (Bathinda)

The Post Graduate Department of Geography, Deon (Bathinda) invited Prof. Shubh Prem Brar (Principal, Retd.) for guest lecture on "Laws, Theories and Models in Scientific Explanations in Geography" on March 7, 2017.

Department of Geography, Govt. College Ropar, Punjab

Focused on the quotation by Mahatma Gandhi "Earth has enough for man's need but not man's greed", the department celebrated Earth Day on 27th April 2017.
