13th APG National Conference

UGC sponsored 13th Conference of Association of Punjab Geographers was organised by the Department of Geography, Pt. Chiranji Lal Sharma Government P.G. College, Karnal, Haryana on 6th - 7th October, 2012. The focal theme of conference "Challenges and Concerns of Geography," was well deliberated by 150 delegates and guests from across the country.

General Body Meeting

The general body meeting of the APG was held just after the valedictory session of 13th APG Conference. Dr. I.P. Abrol, Chairman of the valedictory session was requested to chair the general body meeting. Dr. Dhartm Singh General Secretary, APG welcomed the members and apprised the house about the achievements of APG during last two years.

1st APG International Conference

The Department of Geography, Kurukhestra University, Kurukhestra is hosting 1st APG International Conference and 14th Annual Meet of the Association of Punjab Geographers on the theme "Disasters, Natural Resource Management and Socio-Economic Development", 4-5 October, 2013.

Young Geographer Award

Miss Mahima Chatranta presently working as Scientific Professional at Aryabhatta Geo-informatics Space Application Centre (AGiSAC) Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, was awarded 'Dr. Saminderjeet Singh Young Geographer Award -2012' for her presentation "Temperature and Precipitation Trends in Gangotri Glacier" in a special session meant for Young Geographer Award during the 13th APG National Conference at Karnal.

New office Bearers

Sh. K. Surjit Singh was installed as New President of the APG for the years 2013 and 2014. A bouquet was presented to Sh.K. Surjit Singh by the outgoing President Principal, J.S. Kaliana. Dr. D.D. Sharma was elected as President Elect.

News from the Departments/ Colleges

Department of Geography, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra:
Dr. M.S. Jaglan and Dr. S.P. Kaushik, have been promoted as Professors in Geography.

Department of Geography, M D University, Rohtak:
Dr. S.K. Bansal, Dr. R.S. Sangwan, Dr. Inder Jeet and Dr. P.K. Bhardwaj have been promoted as Professors in Geography

State College of Education Patiala:
Govt. (State) College of Education, Patiala held a two day National Workshop in collaboration with Association of Punjab Geographers on “Learning Photography to develop a Skill of Teaching of Geography and Fine Arts” on 19- 20 September, 2012.


Seminar/ Conferences

Institute for Spatial Planning and Environment Research, Panchkula is organizing 7th Two-day National Seminar on“Emerging Frontiers for Spatial Planning: Development of Human Resource for Promoting Real Estate and Property Management” to be held on April 5-6, 2013. Department of Geography, Panjab University, Chandigarh is organizing a National Seminar on February 7-8, 2013.The Main Theme of the Seminar is “Demographic Dynamism in India with Special Focus on North-Western India”. World Disaster Report 2011:

1. Every year around 13 million babies are born with low birth weight - defined by WHO as below 2,500 grams - and are at increased risk of dying at or soon after birth. About half of these babies are born in south-central Asia (UNSCN, 2010).

2. Every year some 9 million children across the world die before they reach their fifth birthday, and about one-third of these untimely deaths are attributed to under nutrition.

3. By 2020 diet-related chronic diseases are projected to account for almost three-quarters of all deaths worldwide, and 60 per cent of these will be in low- and middle-income countries (WHO).

4. Eight states - Bihar, Chhatisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal - have more desperately poor people than the 26 poorest African nations.
